What Express Entry is, and why it matters for BC

Rather than a standalone visa, Express Entry is a management platform for applications. After you submit an Express Entry profile, IRCC grades it using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and parks it in the Express Entry pool beside every other candidate. About every fortnight an Express Entry drawtakes place, and anyone who meets that round's cut-off receives an Invitation to Apply (ITA). From there, a complete submission is typically finalised in around six months (source: canada.ca, processing times, 2026).

If your plan is a future in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley or on Vancouver Island, treat Express Entry and the BC PNP as one joined-up decision rather than two. British Columbia's Express Entry BC stream hands out an enhanced nomination that adds 600 points to your CRS total, lifting nominees clear of every recent draw threshold. Mapping a BC-first approach early is often the difference between languishing in the pool and landing a swift invitation.

The three Express Entry programs

Underneath Express Entry run three federal economic programs, and qualifying for any one of them is enough to enter the pool. The catch is that each program draws its own thresholds for work history, language scores and credentials, so it pays to know which one fits your background.

A lot of BC newcomers come in via the Canadian Experience Class after building a year on a post-graduation work permit, a familiar path for graduates of UBC, SFU, BCIT and the University of Victoria. For tradespeople in construction or another regulated trade, the Federal Skilled Tradesprogram and British Columbia's trade-focused PNP streams can advance in parallel.

How your CRS score is built

The CRS hands out as much as 1,200 points across four buckets: core human capital (age, schooling, language, Canadian experience), spousal factors, skill transferability and additional points. Since the 2025 reform, the heaviest lever by far is a provincial nomination, valued at 600 points, and in British Columbia that nomination arrives through Express Entry BC.

Express Entry BC: the 600-point bridge

Express Entry BC ties the provincial and federal systems together. You enrol in the Skills Immigration Registration System (SIRS), which marks you out of 200 on inputs such as your BC job offer, pay, experience and language ability. Should the province invite and then nominate you under an EEBC stream, that nomination posts into your Express Entry profile as an enhanced nomination and adds the entire 600 points.

That payoff is biggest for people already employed across Metro Vancouver. A registered nurse with Vancouver Coastal Health or Fraser Health, a developer at a tech firm like SAP, Hootsuite or Clio, or a graduate who completed studies in BC can frequently post a strong SIRS score and then use EEBC to vault over the federal cut-off. Express Entry draw trends in 2026

Across 2026, IRCC has prioritised category-based roundsaimed at particular occupations and French speakers, running them alongside program-specific CEC and PNP draws. A modest CRS can therefore still win an invitation when you sit inside a targeted category, and a number of those categories overlap with British Columbia's in-demand jobs. What stands out across the 2026 calendar so far is the absence of any general, open-to-all draw; IRCC has channelled every invitation through either a program-specific or a category-based round. A further wrinkle is that the bulk of this year's categories ask for at least 12 months of qualifying experience before you can be counted in. For a BC candidate whose CRS lands below the federal cut-off, the recommendation tends to be consistent: work towards an enhanced Express Entry BC nomination.

Applying for Express Entry from BC, step by step

1. 01

   Confirm eligibility and sit a language test

   Verify you clear the FSW, CEC or FST minimums and complete an approved test (IELTS, CELPIP or TEF/TCF).

2. 02

   Create your profile and SIRS registration

   Order an ECA for overseas study, build your Express Entry profile, and enrol in BC's SIRS if Express Entry BC is your target.

3. 03

   Push your CRS score higher

   Lift language results, add spouse points, and chase an enhanced BC PNP nomination for +600 wherever it suits your profile.

4. 04

   Collect your ITA

   Clear the draw cut-off, or hold a nomination, and IRCC sends an Invitation to Apply, after which you have 60 days to file.

5. 05

   File a complete PR application

   Submit police certificates, medicals, proof of funds and reference letters. Getting this watertight is what keeps refusals away.

6. 06

   Land as a permanent resident

   Once approved, finish landing, register for MSP and obtain your PR card. Welcome to British Columbia.
